Top Rated in the Nation for Fire Response

An ISO Class 1 rating is the highest possible classification awarded by the Public Protection Classification® program of the Insurance Services Office (ISO). This distinction places the Seminole County Fire Department among the top fire departments in the nation.

How Does This Benefit You?

Seminole County homeowners and local business owners may be eligible for lower insurance premiums as a result of the ISO Class 1 rating earned by the Seminole County Fire Department.

This top ISO Class 1 rating reflects an exceptional level of fire protection, providing greater safety and peace of mind for residents and businesses, along with the potential for reduced insurance costs.

Class 1 rating is the highest possible, reflecting excellent fire repression capabilities. It places Seminole County Fire Department among the top 1% nationwide. ISO evaluates the department’s overall structure (e.g., staffing, training equipment), water supply systems and emergency communications.

To determine the ISO rating for fire departments, the organization conducts a field survey and scores fire departments across four key areas, including:

  1. Emergency communications systems (e.g., dispatching for fires) 10% weight
  2. The overall department (e.g., staffing, training, certification, equipment, and facilities) 50% weight
  3. Water-supply system (e.g., inspection and testing of hydrants, availability of water needed to suppress fires) 40% weight
  4. Extra credit, reviews community risk reduction (e.g., fire prevention codes and enforcement, education and outreach) extra 5.5% weight

ISO (or Insurance Services Office) gives fire departments a 110 rating regarding their ability to effectively respond to and prevent fires. A lower number rating means that a fire department is performing to higher standards. More specifically, an ISO Class 1 rating represents an exemplary fire suppression program.

It is reviewed through the Public Protection Classification® program. ISO's purpose is to help communities evaluate their public fire-protection services in order to be held to high national standards.

Most insurance companies use this rating system to determine the fire insurance rates for both residential and commercial properties within a community. Communities with an ISO 1 ranking are afforded the lowest fire insurance rates.

No. Unincorporated Seminole County, including the municipalities that the Seminole County Fire Department serves, which are Altamonte Springs, Winter Springs and Casselberry, are predominately affected and most will be classified as an ISO 1.
