Shelter FAQ

  • Your pets can accompany you to a pet-friendly shelter. Do not forget proper identification, medical records, crates, and food. There will be pet-friendly shelters available for Special Needs clients as well.
  • Information regarding transportation to a shelter will be distributed when shelters openings are announced.
  • General populations shelters typically remain open for 2-3 days depending on the severity of the disaster.

Yes

If any of the following apply to you, consider evacuating to a shelter:

  • If you live in a mobile or manufactured home
  • If your home is in a low-lying area or a flood zone
  • If your home is not structurally rated for hurricane conditions
  • Seek housing with family or friends. Recovery shelters will open temporarily as disaster housing alternatives are assessed.
  • Weapons, firearms, alcohol, and drugs are not permitted in county shelters.
  • Make sure any trees on your property are properly trimmed.
  • Purchase materials you may need for post-storm repairs (window covers, tarps, etc.) before you leave.
  • Verify your insurance coverage.
  • Take pictures or videos of your home, inside and outside, to use as verification for insurance in the event it is damaged.
  • Install prominent, visible address numbers on your house.
  • Secure any outdoor items, including lawn furniture, potted plants, and pool items.

The following will be provided at the shelter:

  • Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner
  • Personal space accommodations measuring 21 square feet (7ft x 3ft)
  • Presence of law enforcement

The following items need to be brought to a shelter:

  • Bedding: cot/blanket/pillow (Cots are NOT provided at general population shelters)
  • Personal medications
  • Special dietary needs or foods
  • Comfort/entertainment items
  • Photo identification
  • Extra clothing
  • Shelters are primarily staffed by County employees; however, in some cases, volunteer groups who receive specialized training from the Office of Emergency Management will staff some shelters.
